Discovering Life-Long Inspirations in Nepal
Jocelyn, Yr. 2, BBA in Global Business
When I walked out of my room, after spending hectic hours of study on an exam, I saw this piece of small paper card on the table in the living room, which has a picture of a little kid smiling happily and the quote- “Living in the moment. Living our life with smile.” Memories from two weeks ago hit me strongly. I immediately realized, it has already been two weeks after this transformational trip, which I ticked off the bucket list, met amazing people, and most importantly, received life-long inspirations.
Reflecting on the planning process, when our team were coming up with proposals and plans for teaching the “business topic” and interaction session with young kids, our team faced a range of challenges. These would not be successful without the comments, reminders, and assistance in team collaboration from them. Meanwhile, this also reflects that I need continuous improvement in dealing with team collaboration challenges and time management, such that even when working in a new team, I will be able to work collaboratively with the team and meet deadlines.
Pink, who has been traveling for almost most of her life, shared with us a lot about her reasons for founding the charity and her experience while travelling around the world. I really admire her devotion to the Nepal society and her being the role model of “live in the moment”, one of the program’s values, as she just does not behave like typical Hong Kong people, but instead to do what she really likes and wants, to travel around the world looking for new challenges and experiences, and to continuously assist the locals in Nepal. I really hope that I can have the same determination and courage as her, to walk an unusual path and to live in the moment. This has led me to re-consider my future, whether I should simply, just like others, get a stable and high-paying job, or to live my own life that I deeply desire.
Moving on to the life-long inspirations that I got, there were so many touching and memorable moments, but the ones that stood out led me to two significant learnings. First, happiness can be very simple. Living in Hong Kong, we are instilled with the mindset that fortune and success is the key to happiness. However, being in the Nepal where people are less affluent, I found that happiness does not necessarily come from the possession of resources or social status, it can also happen because of simple interactions. This brought me to ponder, what does happiness mean to me. Being wealthy or achieving crowd recognition is just one of the millions of ways to yield happiness, simple interactions and acts are also what make people happy and satisfied.
Another realization I had is that small steps do create huge impacts. Although they we could not communicate well since the ladies are not as proficient in English, I was so happy that they really liked the product and appreciated my effort. Therefore, these efforts in my eyes might seem trivial, but in fact, these already made them satisfied and even appreciated our effort.
All in all, I am so grateful for this unique opportunity, which I walked away from the academic pressure, digital disturbance and other daily burdens, to accomplish my personal goals and contribute to improving the lives of the underprivileged. However, not only were the locals benefited, me myself also reaped a range of benefits, facilitating personal growth will all the unforgettable inspirations. |
