A Journey of Impact and Self-Discovery
Rachel, Yr. 4, BBA in Global Business
The service-learning trip to Nepal has brought me new realizations and understanding towards myself. I was shocked by the mix of selfish and selfless reasons among my teammates for joining the trip. Some aimed to do good to the world but doubted their impact on the Nepalese, while others sought to broaden their horizons. Personally, I hoped to inspire hope and dreams in others while becoming a kind person unafraid of change.
I questioned whether I truly brought change during the trip, especially realizing the students already had decent education and dreams. Despite this, I believed in the value of small gestures of support and kindness, likening them to a candle bringing happiness and connection. Regardless of the impact's size, I saw it as goodwill that persisted beyond the trip.
The journey taught me to remove assumptions and understand others better, both locals and teammates. I learned to appreciate small things and found peace in the village, reflecting on myself. I discovered my ability to spread forgiveness, resolve conflicts, and empower others, contrary to my self-perception.
While the trip may not have met my initial expectations, it led to personal growth and understanding. I view it as a starting point, reminding me of what comes next. Though unsure of my impact in Nepal, I'm certain of my ability to help others in the future. I aim to continue spreading kindness, empowering others, and understanding societal needs, ensuring my actions align with my aspirations. |
