Feel with Your Heart
Angel Ho
This journey was a unique experience. It not only gave me an opportunity to have a taste of life in a rather uncommon place, but it also encouraged me to feel the world with my heart.
I remember it took us almost a whole day to go to the mountain village from the urban area. We sat on the travel bus for around 7 to 8 hours, and then we got onto a jeep, which drove over numerous hills and slopes. The road was uneven and the trip was exhausting. Getting off the jeep, we had a tormenting hike for half an hour with a 10-kg backpack. But when I looked at the wonderful view, the clear blue sky and the milky cloud, the high mountains and the flowing water, feeling the sun gently shining on my face, my tiredness faded away in an instant.
Every aspect of life on the mountain was simple, and our life returned to the most natural state. We woke up to chicken’s calls every morning before starting our work. We communicated with the locals mainly with a ‘Namaste’, a few simple English phrases and a lot of body language. The volunteers and locals did not talk much, but then we had more interaction through eye-contact and facial expression. The Nepalese children were indeed adorable! Just a seemingly repetitive and boring game and some easy English words could make them burst into laughter with innocence and radiance. I often thought what we could do was very limited, but their facial expression seemed to tell us that they were satisfied at the moment.
There was no convenient transportation. There was no fascinating Internet. There was no hot water for a cozy shower. But what they had was already sufficient. If you free yourself from the ties of material pleasure and feel and comprehend with your heart, life can be very simple and satisfying.
(Thanks Hing Sing Yuen, our volunteer, who translated Angel's testimonial from Chinese to English.) |
