Identity Change
Natalie Warne, Year 4
This year, it was my second time participating in the ‘SLTP Global Community Service Project – Nepal’. After one year, despite going to the same village and the same school, I had some different experience because of a different ‘identity’.
Last year, I was a participant, mostly executing what had already been planned. This year, as a leader, I had to lead my team to conduct different tasks. This year, both seniors and juniors had more opportunities to be involved in planning projects. As a leader, I had some new challenges including how to facilitate communication in my team, how to divide labor, and how to deal with post-hoc problems, and through these tasks, I gained some new experience.
Last year, I was a year 3 student, and I applied to the project mainly for interest and trying something new. This year, I was a year 4 student approaching graduation, and what caused me to apply again was the rare tranquillity in Nepal. In the days of no Internet and no contact to the outside world, I tried to temporarily forget my worries and had a respite (or better put, an escape) from life.
During the day, our team worked together to accomplish our work, talked and played; During our break, we unwound to appreciate the environment and to experience nature. Although what we ate was just plain food, we had a fulfilling life. Happiness and satisfaction, could, in fact, be such pure and such simple.
(Thanks Hing Sing Yuen, our volunteer, who translated Natalie’s testimonial from Chinese to English.)
