“Real” life
Pakhin Chiu, Year 4
The most touching event in this 8-day Nepal trip is not watching sunrise at Pokhara, not
visiting the world heritage Durbar Square in Kathmandu, nor viewing the traditional ethnic dance
of the Gurung people, but the smiling faces, striving, and the simple life of the Nepalese people.
The name of this trip was “Global Village Community Service Project”, and the goal was
to help villagers in the mountain area of Nepal rebuilding schools and to teach the kids. Rather
than bragging how I helped others as a volunteer, I would like share about what kind of an
experience this trip has offered me: I left my comfort zone, learned more about myself, became
more thankful, and changed all my ideas about Nepal. Eating traditional Nepalese food dhal baht,
drinking hot tea prepared by villagers in the morning, looking at naughty yet cute smiley faces of
the kids in mountain area and the sweet smiles and graceful dance steps of the Nepalese girls, the
events in Nepal mesmerized me thoroughly and I still miss the amazing time.
Apart from these, the most impactful and unforgettable event must be living with the
Gurung people in mountain area. I experienced the simple and free lifestyle in the mountain area,
wonderful nature, and unforgettable beauty of Nepal. Their life was simple, without worries, and
disconnected to the outside world, and therefore I learned the true meaning of “live in the moment”,
“happiness lies in contentment”, and “simple is beautiful”. I would like to quote a phrase by the
German writer Hermann Hesse, ‘Truly, I wish to be able to glance and smile, sit and walk this way,
too, thus free, thus venerable, thus concealed, thus open, thus child-like and mysterious. Truly,
only a person who has succeeded in reaching the innermost part of his self would glance and walk
this way.’ I believe that every villager in mountain area knows exactly what Hesse means.
To be honest, the life in the mountain area of Nepal is so different from Hong Kong. It is
not a colorful world as imagined by people, and it is not well developed. Even though they do not
have luxurious living environment, no abundant food, and no fashionable clothes, the villagers in
mountain area do not mourn for their suffering, instead they enjoy their simple and free lifestyle.
In Hong Kong, we exhaust ourselves with work, career, and study every day. We have abundant
food, warm shelter, and sufficient clothes, but are we really living or simply surviving? |
