Be your true self, live in the moment!
Sam Wu, Year 4
Cherishing the starry nights in the village; missing the crowing of roosters and the barking of dogs; and
experiencing eventful days without internet. How simple yet romantic the time spent there!
Compared to Hong Kong, material life in a Nepal village is at a survival level, yet it allows metropolitans
forget all the pressures and burdens. In spite of limited entertainment in the mountains, those energetic
children are able to find fun in their own way. Going to school, playing around and several simple meals
are more than enough to keep them smiling all day long. This simple and beautiful happiness inspired us
- big city dwellers. We were able to break away from shackles of mobile phones and put the focus back
on people and the matters at hand, while simultaneously enjoying nature.
We traveled specifically to Nepal for volunteering work, yet actually the locals taught me the meaning of
simple happiness. Every time when I played with the children, I thought they were awesome despite
their lack of resources, given their ability to live joyfully. While getting along with those children, I
realized happiness is not based on the material world. “Rock, Paper, Scissors” is more fun than mobile
phones and computers. In the very beginning, I was worried it would be gloomy without internet, but
surprisingly I had a great time.
Be your true self, live in the moment. Experiencing simple happiness was the greatest benefit of this
volunteering trip. |
